Performance Contemporary-

Performance Contemporary 2024, curated by Samantha Watson-Wood of Friends With Strangers, presents a diverse program of experimental and ephemeral performance works by some of Sydney’s most exciting contemporary artists. The artists used the body as a medium to explore key social, cultural and political ideas.

Watson-Wood states: Performance Contemporary presents an incredible opportunity for some of the most cutting edge contemporary artists to engage with the unique spaces of Carriageworks and create unforgettable experimental art experiences for audiences at Sydney Contemporary. We are thrilled to be working with leading artists Dr Christian Thompson AO and HOSSEI for this year’s program which will be brought to life on Art Night”.

Christian Thompson: Recital

Internationally renowned Bidjara/Chinese-Australian contemporary artist Dr Christian Thompson AO will present Recital, a rare live rendition of sound works informed by two decades of recorded sound practice, re-imagining Thompson’s traditional language. Now categorised as extinct, Bidjara language is revived in this live performance, motivated by the notion that just a single spoken word re-classifies it as a living one. Recital delivers a sensory experience of language and sound that is powerfully connected to both past and present.

HOSSEI: ESSSENSSSE

HOSSEI, a multidisciplinary artist with Persian, Turkish, and Russian ancestry, will present ESSSENSSSE, a performance and installation work resembling an aquatic ecosystem that explores the tenacity of the human spirit. Inspired by a fascination with sand dollar sea creatures, believed in mediaeval times to be mermaid currency, HOSSEI encourages a stripping away of corporeal human qualities to reveal the intuition, feelings and energies underneath. ESSSENSSSE is about letting go and being one with the body, mind and spirit, embracing its purity and vulnerability.
