Julia Morison ONZM will unveil her latest body of work, Arcana, presented by Jonathan Smart Gallery / Emily Gardener Projects (booth I12).

Morison’s practice investigates and reimagines systems of order, drawing from Euclidean geometry, constructivism, formal abstraction, alchemy, numerology, Kabbalah, and tarot. Her recent exhibition Ode to Hilma (City Gallery Wellington, 2024) responded to Hilma af Klint’s The Ten Largest, highlighting their shared interest in spiritual symbolism as a universal language, and the myths and structures embedded within the collective unconscious.

At Sydney Contemporary, Morison brings tarot archetypes into sculptural form with bronze works representing the tarot major arcana. Throughout the fair, tarot readings will be hosted within the installation by Four Worlds Tarot, extending the work’s engagement with our layered interpretation of signs and symbols.

Hosted by Jonathan Smart Gallery / Emily Gardener Projects.

Location: Carriageworks, Booth I12.

Join us for the launch of Djon Mundine: Windows & Mirrors, a landmark publication celebrating the writings of one of Australia’s most influential cultural figures.

Across nearly three decades of essays, critiques, and reflections, Mundine charts the shifting landscape of contemporary art and the central place of Indigenous voices within it. This richly illustrated volume gathers his words from 1999 to the present, offering both a window into his enduring practice and a mirror held to the nation’s cultural history.

About the Author
Djon Mundine OAM, a Bandjalung man from northern NSW, is a leading curator, writer, and cultural leader. Best known as the concept curator of The Aboriginal Memorial (1988) at the National Gallery of Australia, his four-decade career has profoundly shaped understanding of contemporary Indigenous art through his curatorial projects, essays, and advocacy.

About the Book
Windows & Mirrors is the first comprehensive volume to chart Mundine’s career as a writer and thinker, including texts written for major exhibitions and institutions across Australia and abroad, illustrated with archival images and documentation. Published by Art Ink in 2025, it is both a vital record and a living testament to an extraordinary voice in contemporary culture.

This year at Sydney Contemporary, curator Sebastian Goldspink will lead free dedicated First Nations art tours across the weekend, shining a spotlight on the exceptional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists featured across the Fair.

These tours will highlight key works and provide deeper insight into the cultural significance and contemporary practices of First Nations artists.

Goldspink is a Sydney based independent curator and proud descendant of the Burramattagal people of Western Sydney. He is a guest judge of this year’s MA Emerging art prize for Sydney Contemporary.

Entry to this tour is on a first come, first serve basis and there are 20 spots available. There is no RSVP. A valid ticket to Sydney Contemporary 2025 is required for entry to this tour.
