A Note from Fair Director, Zoe Paulsen
As we celebrate our 10th edition, Fair Director Zoe Paulsen reflects on the community, creativity and ambition that have shaped Sydney Contemporary over the past decade, and what to look forward to at this years Fair.
This September, Sydney Contemporary celebrates its 10th edition. Reaching a decade invites reflection, not only on how the Fair has grown, but on the community that has grown with it. Over time, what has become clear is that Sydney Contemporary means something different to everyone involved. Artists, galleries, collectors, partners and visitors each carry their own experience of the Fair. Together, those experiences have shaped Sydney Contemporary into something far greater than a four-day event.
Since launching in 2013, Sydney Contemporary has grown into the largest and most influential gathering of contemporary art in Australasia. It is a place where artists are discovered, galleries build lasting relationships, collectors encounter works they will live with for years, and audiences connect with contemporary art, some for the very first time.
Over the past decade, the Fair has welcomed more than 250,000 visitors and facilitated over $154 million in art sales. These figures matter not simply because of their scale, but because they represent real opportunities for artists and galleries. In an environment where artists need to earn a living and galleries continue to invest in creative careers, Sydney Contemporary plays an important role in supporting a thriving contemporary art ecosystem. At its heart, the Fair is about creating meaningful connections, between artists and audiences, galleries and collectors, ideas and conversations. In an increasingly digital world, there remains no substitute for experiencing art in person.
This September, Carriageworks will once again be transformed by contemporary art on an extraordinary scale. More than 100 galleries and exhibitors from nine countries will present works by over 500 artists from 33 countries, bringing together established names, emerging voices and new perspectives from across Australia, the region and beyond.
First Edition, 2013
Ninth Edition, 2025
At the heart of the Fair is the Galleries sector, where visitors can discover the breadth and diversity of contemporary practice today. Leading exhibitors including 1301SW | STARKWHITE, Alcaston Gallery, Ames Yavuz, CHALKHORSE, Gow Langsford, Fine Arts, Sydney, Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin, OLSEN, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sullivan+Strumpf and Utopia Art Sydney return alongside a strong group of new and returning galleries including Annandale Galleries, Messums London, Fox Jensen, Sutton Gallery, NO FANTASY, China Heights and Syrup Contemporary. Together, they present an unparalleled opportunity to explore contemporary art from across Australasia and around the world in one place.
For visitors looking to discover what comes next, the Futures sector offers a glimpse into the future of contemporary art. Bringing together emerging artists and galleries at pivotal moments in their development, Futures has become one of the Fair’s most exciting spaces for new ideas, experimentation, and discovery.
Following a successful debut in 2025, Photo Sydney returns to spotlight some of the most compelling contemporary photographic practices from Australia and beyond. Reflecting the growing prominence of photography within contemporary collecting, the sector showcases the breadth of lens-based practice today, from documentary and portraiture to conceptual and experimental image-making.
One of the Fair’s most loved sectors, Works on Paper celebrates the immediacy and intimacy of paper-based practice. Through drawing, printmaking, collage and mixed-media works, visitors can engage closely with artistic process while discovering works that are often an accessible entry point for both new and experienced collectors.

One of the enduring pleasures of Sydney Contemporary is seeing how artists respond to the remarkable scale and architecture of Carriageworks itself. Each year, the building becomes a site for ambitious installations, performances and unexpected interventions that challenge conventional expectations of what an art fair can be. This continues in 2026 through Installation and Performance Contemporary, curated by José Da Silva. Alongside our Talks program curated by Mitchell Oakley Smith, visitors can also experience artist booth talks, guided tours, demonstrations, Kid Contemporary and an exceptional VIP program.
While anniversaries naturally invite reflection, contemporary art is always about what comes next. The artists whose careers are still unfolding. The collections that continue to evolve. The conversations and ideas that will shape the decade ahead.
As we celebrate this edition, I invite you to join us at Carriageworks from 3-6 September. Whether you are a seasoned collector, a first-time visitor or one of the more than 25,000 art lovers who return each year, Sydney Contemporary offers a unique opportunity to discover, connect and experience the energy, ambition and creativity that define contemporary art today.
