photo access
Photo Sydney
Photo access is the centre for contemporary photography, film, video, and media arts in the Canberra region. As an established not-for-profit arts organisation, it is the longest running photographic organisation of its kind in Australia and is committed to experimentation, inclusivity and social engagement. Photo access nurtures a vibrant national community of artists who are pushing the boundaries of the medium and engaging with photography in all its forms.
For the past forty years, photo access has been an important site for presentation and experimentation through our monthly exhibitions, annual artist-in-residence program and weekly workshops and educational programs that offer inclusive and low-cost access to both digital facilities and public access analogue darkrooms. Our resources empower photographers to experiment with different technical processes and undertake a personal creative approach to photography, which is augmented by our network of artists and industry sponsors who support peer-to-peer development.
The past few years has seen a reduction in the number of Australian organisations dedicated to the presentation of photographic work, so our network has grown to become an important national resource that now attracts audiences and artist participation from all around the country including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Western Australia. Our location in the nation’s capital makes us an important nexus for dialogue and engagement through both physical and online programs and events in collaboration with our national partners.
