With a talk by Dr. Mark Ferson, President of the New Australian Bookplate Society
An ex libris, also known as a bookplate, is a printed or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the front endpaper, to indicate ownership. Bookplates often bear a motif relating to the book’s owner, such as a coat-of-arms, crest, badge, motto, or a design commissioned from an artist or designer. The name of the owner usually follows an inscription such as “from the books of…” or “from the library of…”, or in Latin, “ex libris”. Bookplates are important evidence for the provenance of books. The most traditional technique used to make bookplates is burin engraving. The engraved copper matrix is then printed with an intaglio press on paper, and the resulting print can be pasted into the book to indicate ownership.

Dianne’s new works revisit her earlier unique works of painted gouache on vellum whereby influences from illuminated manuscripts and Indian miniatures combine with her use of theatre metaphors and notions of chance and fortune. These rare works take the form of small paintings on vellum with gold leaf illumination. Dianne will demonstrate how vellum is prepared for painting, and how she works with gouache paints and gold leaf illumination. Dianne’s concertina book Theatre of Embarkation (1986) created with gouache paintings on vellum and her new work will be discussed during her demonstration.

A zine (pronounced zeen) is an independently or self-published booklet, often created by physically cutting and gluing text, icons, and images together onto a master flat for photocopying. The publication is usually folded and stapled. What skills do we need to share with others to support and nurture the future of zine making?

Chunwoo Nam, Tamarind Alumni and founder Print Art Research Centre (PARC), Seoul.
Chine-Colle is a technique, used in conjunction with printmaking processes such as etching or lithography, that results in a two-layered paper support. Chine is the French word for China, referring to the fact that the thin paper originally used with this technique was imported from China. In addition to China, paper was also imported from India or Japan. Collé is the French word for “”glued.”
Artist and educator Chunwoo Nam was born in Seoul, Korea and holds a B.F.A. degree from the University of Hong-Ik, Korea; studied fine art lithography at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and received his M.F.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
