‘The works presented at Sydney Contemporary show Mike’s ability to create challenging, ambitious environments that dance the line between assemblage, social sculpture, installation and performance, encouraging viewers to step into a space of play and participation. Piet pavers is an intricately mosaiced collection of floor tiles flecked with wood, gold and precious stones that fit together like a puzzle in the French paving pattern – the harmonious modularity calls on Greco-Roman architecture, here, wittily inlaid with playful objects, yet simultaneously operating as functional flooring. Perched atop the installation of Piet pavers is Frog pond fountain stack, emulating the beauty of classical fountains, in place of marble are salvaged chunks of concrete, flowing with water from a cleverly recirculating fountain that pours into a pond created for actual frogs -expectedly bringing nature, the civic environment and formal architecture into the art fair. 

 

Pit Stop cafe is another reminder from the artist to to look at the world with a child-like curiosity and to discover art in the everyday – the cafe becomes a space where sculpture, design and community coalesce providing a moment to connect, refuel and be inspired within the bustling environment of the art fair.”
