Mike Hewson transforms the Sydney Contemporary Café into a shared sculptural setting and presents a new fountain assembled from industrial and organic materials.
Mike Hewson presents two major projects for Installation Contemporary: a takeover of the Sydney Contemporary Café and a whimsical fountain sculpture installed on an expanse of flooring inlaid with tile shards and found objects. Extending his interest in public infrastructure and the social encounter, Hewson will rework the café environment through shared dining areas and structures that blur the line between temporary architecture and performance. Alongside this, Hewson presents a frog-pond recirculating fountain tower made from disused construction material, a watering can and lily pads. Practical, playful and makeshift, the project brings fresh improvisational energy to the fair, a gathering point around an unusual ecological fantasy.

Mike Hewson is an Aotearoa-born artist whose practice engages sculpture, architecture, public space and urban infrastructure. His works often intervene in built environments, creating situations that reconsider how people move through, use and understand shared civic and social spaces.

About Installations
Installations presents ambitious contemporary art throughout Carriageworks, and for the first time, extends into the city. The program of 14 projects features sculpture, textiles, painting, photography, kinetic forms, and public interventions, with works that are generous and immediate but also ask us to look more closely at the social, ecological, and cultural systems shaping our world.
Artists use spectacle, material invention and public address to explore some of the defining questions of contemporary life: how histories inhabit place, how images circulate, how materials carry memory, and how audiences gather, move, participate and reflect. Installations is curated by José Da Silva, Director of UNSW Galleries.
