Join artist Atong Atem and MARS Gallery at Booth I06 to hear about Atem’s textile practice!
Atong Atem is an Ethiopian-born, South Sudanese artist living in Melbourne/Naarm. Working predominantly in photography and recently expanding her practice to textiles, Atem’s bold visual language questions the dynamics of identity in Australia. Exploring the often-forgotten relationship between colonisation and African textiles, Atem’s kitanga (kanga) textiles draw on a myriad of cultures, iconographies and aesthetics, bringing to life the many cultural influences that have shaped the artist’s life. Atem’s new large-scale textile works for Sydney Contemporary 2024 mark an exciting venture for the young artist, pushing the boundaries of her practice.
