Nabilah Nordin transforms steel into gestural, enigmatic forms that bend, lean and hover between drawing, sculpture and movement.
Nabilah Nordin creates sculptures that feel physically charged. Presented together, Phrase, Century and Torque continue the artist’s interest in material experimentation, spatial interplay and the expressive possibilities of abstraction. Developed from intuitive lines translated into steel through bending, welding and assembly, the works operate like drawings released into space. Their flowing, sinuous forms suggest movement, balance and transformation, while their surfaces retain a sense of touch, pressure and improvisation. Nordin invites viewers to encounter abstraction as a bodily experience: playful, precarious and animated by the tension between structure and gesture.
“I’m always looking for what sculpture can be, and what it can do. I build through a process of testing, adjusting and responding. I want works to feel active, as though they are holding themselves together, moving or becoming something else.”

About the Artist
Nabilah Nordin is a Singapore-born artist based in New York. Her materially driven practice explores the formal and surface possibilities of sculpture through improvisation, unconventional materials and abstract forms that often appear to defy gravity or hover on the edge of collapse. She is primarily interested in expressing the physicality of tension – how sculpture can embody the underlying forces of natural phenomena, such as growth, depletion, decay, collapse, and entanglement.

About Installations
Installations presents ambitious contemporary art throughout Carriageworks, and for the first time, extends into the city. The program of 14 projects features sculpture, textiles, painting, photography, kinetic forms, and public interventions, with works that are generous and immediate but also ask us to look more closely at the social, ecological, and cultural systems shaping our world.
Artists use spectacle, material invention and public address to explore some of the defining questions of contemporary life: how histories inhabit place, how images circulate, how materials carry memory, and how audiences gather, move, participate and reflect. Installations is curated by José Da Silva, Director of UNSW Galleries.
