Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts

Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts is a leading independent platform for contemporary and experimental arts practice based in Gurambilbarra / Townsville on Wulgurukaba and Bindal Country, North Queensland.

For four decades Umbrella has played a vital role in supporting artists from North Queensland while connecting regional practices with national and international peers and audiences. The organisation presents ambitious exhibitions, commissions new work, develops touring exhibitions, and brokers acquisitions and placements of artists’ work into significant public and private collections, helping position regional practices within the broader Australian contemporary art discourse.

Umbrella operates a contemporary gallery alongside a dedicated artist studio and project space downstairs, providing a site for experimentation, and the development of new work.

The organisation delivers an annual program of exhibitions, touring projects, residencies, workshops and public programs, alongside PUNQ, its biennial site-specific art festival presented across significant natural and urban sites throughout North Queensland.
