FLINDERS LANE GALLERY
Galleries
Flinders Lane Gallery (FLG), established in 1989 and directed by Claire Harris for over 27 years, is one of Australia’s leading independent commercial galleries. Located in Melbourne’s iconic Nicholas Building, FLG is committed to presenting rigorous, conceptually engaged contemporary art by emerging, mid-career and established Australian artists.
The gallery’s program is defined by depth and continuity. Across more than three decades, FLG has built a reputation for fostering long-term artist relationships, supporting professional development, and championing practices that demonstrate technical excellence, intellectual integrity and emotional resonance. A robust annual exhibition schedule typically comprising over twenty solo exhibitions alongside curated group presentations sits at the core of the gallery’s identity.
FLG places strong emphasis on critical discourse. Each exhibition is accompanied by commissioned essays, and the gallery has produced multiple substantial publications, including The Big Book of Little Art Essays (2024), documenting 110 exhibitions from the past decade and featuring leading Australian writers. This commitment to scholarship distinguishes FLG within the commercial sector.
An early adopter of digital platforms, FLG launched virtual tours in 2017 and maintains a comprehensive online presence connecting collectors, designers and institutions nationally and internationally.
In 2025, FLG celebrated 25 years of its Exploration emerging artist program, which has launched the careers of numerous significant Australian artists. With ongoing institutional placements, major prize recognition, and the development of an Artist Residency in White Cliffs, NSW, FLG continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its core mission: sustained, thoughtful advocacy for Australian contemporary art.
