#WeLiveHere2017. The lights are on. Somebody’s home.
#WeLiveHere2017 collaborates with the residents of Waterloo’s public housing estate, particularly the Matavai and Turanga towers. A major social impact art project that celebrates the unique precinct, before it changes forever, giving voice to the people within them through a sentient light sculpture.
The project marks a moment in time, before tenant relocations and an unprecedented urban renewal project begins.
In September 2017, two high-rise towers in Waterloo will become beautiful towers of light, as every resident is issued with a coloured mood light for their window. By transforming these iconic and highly visible buildings, the residents are given the opportunity to transform their building. The simple act of switching on their light, and changing the colour to how they feel, highlights their presence to the broader community. The lights symbolise the colourful lives of each resident, celebrating what is possible when a community comes together and acknowledging this community before seismic changes occur in Waterloo.
The light project and its social platform explore the diverse stories from within the precinct, instigating important dialogue around equitable cities and the right to a home. Opening night will have live music from The Sapphires, Chinese opera and more.
Project Launch: Saturday 9 September 5-8pm
Lights On: Nightly 9 September – 1 October 5:30-10pm
