Printmaking has a long tradition in Europe where relief printing first flourished in the 15th century. Some of the greatest European artists like Dürer, Rembrandt, and Goya were accomplished printers. Other more contemporary artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Max Ernst, not only printed their own work but also collaborated with master printers. Particularly in the late 1950s and the 1960s, there was a flourish of activity, with the establishment of workshops, studios and print publishing houses, most of which have grown and strengthened since.
In Australia in recent years custom-printing has become a significant part of contemporary printmaking practice and has seen a considerable increase in facilities for custom-printing, like the print workshops represented here in PAPER Contemporary including the Australian Print Workshop, The Art Vault, Monsoon Publishing, Cicada Press, Whaling Road Studio, Marnling Press, Negative Press, Editions Tremblay, Umbrella Studio, and many others like Basil Hall Studio, Lancaster Press and Viridian Press
