Kid Contemporary with photoaccess: Expanded Cinema: Draw, Scratch, Project
This year, Kid Contemporary invites young visitors to step inside the world of experimental filmmaking through a collaborative expanded cinema project.
Working alongside artists Nicci Haynes and Louise Curham, children will have the opportunity to draw, scratch and create directly onto 16mm film. Individual contributions will then be combined into a collective artwork and projected onto a screen, transforming simple marks and gestures into a vibrant moving image experience.
The project introduces children to analogue filmmaking processes while encouraging creativity, experimentation and hands-on participation. It offers a rare opportunity to engage with film as a physical material, exploring how light, colour, movement and sound come together to create cinema.
Alongside the film-making activity, the project may expand to include live sound, music and performance elements, drawing on the tradition of “expanded cinema” – a form of moving image practice that extends beyond the screen to create an immersive and interactive experience for audiences.
The result will be a playful and collaborative artwork that evolves throughout the Fair, inviting children and families to not only make art, but see their own creations brought to life through projection.
