Event Details

‘In visual perception a colour is almost never seen as it really is – as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art’ Josef Albers.

Colour is, quite literally, a figment of our imagination.  From Monet’s blue shadows in the Haystack paintings to the optical mixing techniques used by the impressionists, artists have been experts in exploiting the subjectivity of colour perception.

In this workshop, hosted by Eckersley’s Art & Craft in the Squiggla Making Space as part of the Fair’s Create Contemporary program, we will explore some of the ideas initiated by Josef Albers through his teachings at the Bauhaus and then later at Black Mountain College. We will make collages using coloured paper of various tones and transparencies provided by Eckersley’s Art & Craft. The aim is to gain an understanding that colour is not absolute, but rather a subjective experience that is dependent on relationships and light.
